The original War Memorial Hall was built by public subscription in 1956 in memory of those who lost their lives in the Second World War conflict. It was renovated and enlarged by the Napier City Council in 1995 to continue as a living, working memorial, befitting those Napier Citizens who served and died in conflicts during the 20th Century. Designed by esteemed architect Guy Natusch, the Napier War Memorial opened on 14 July 1957.
Originally featuring a conference hall, restaurant, Roll of Honour, Eternal Flame, fountain, and pond, the building has evolved over decades to meet the community’s needs.
The facility has undergone several transformations - in 1978, 1995 and most notably in 2017 when it was refurbished into a conferencing venue. During the 2017 upgrade, the Roll of Honour and Eternal Flame were removed, prompting a community-driven effort to reinstate these significant elements. On 6 August 2023, the restored Napier War Memorial and its iconic Floral Clock were officially rededicated and reopened to the public.
Today, it stands as both a solemn memorial and a versatile hub for conferences, meetings, and events in Hawke’s Bay.
